The recent National Integrated Cancer Control Act ( NICCA ) Localization Bataan Summit, held in Balanga City, Bataan, marked a significant milestone in cancer care and awareness in the Philippines.
Cancer is a pressing issue in the country, ranking as the second leading cause of death. The NICCA promises advancements in cancer awareness, prevention, assistance, and providing free medicines.
Hon. Francis Garcia expressed his gratitude to the Department of Health Central Luzon Center for Health Development (DOH CLCHD) for their support in LGU’s efforts against cancer and providing vaccines for cancer prevention.
Usec. Enrique Tayag highlighted the importance of a comprehensive, collaborative approach to enhance the cancer control program, while Usec. Maria Rosario Vergeire elaborated on the 12 promises outlined in the NICCA.
The core objectives of the NICCA are to save more lives of cancer patients, improve their access to quality healthcare, and reduce the financial burden of cancer treatments.
Among the many types of cancer that can be prevented effectively, one of them is cervical cancer
During the presentation, two cervical cancer screening models were discussed. Dr. Ingrid Magnata presented the Scale Up Cervical Cancer Elimination with Secondary Prevention Strategy (SUCCESS) Model and HPV DNA Screening Pathway. On the other hand, Dr. Bogs Rivera presented the VIA-assisted AI screening model that uses a colposcope.
Furthermore, JHPIEGO Philippines Technical Advisor Dr. Cecilia Llave presented the Best Practices and Lessons learned on the Use of VIA for Cervical Cancer Screening whereas Dr. Stefanie Dimatatac presented Best Practices and Lessons Learned in the SUCCESS Implementation.
