Despite the rapidly evolving tech landscape, one thing remains constant—the unwavering commitment of the Department of Science and Technology – Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) to drive inclusive, ethical, and high-impact innovation in the Philippines.
Today, ASTICON 2025 was successfully held at Novotel Manila, marking its second year of pushing boundaries in science and technology. A hearty congratulations to the DOST-ASTI team for another milestone event that puts Filipino innovation front and center!

What is ASTICON?
The Advanced Science and Technology Innovation Conference (ASTICON) is DOST-ASTI’s flagship annual gathering of scientists, researchers, technologists, government leaders, and innovators. It is a venue where ideas are shared, partnerships are formed, and technologies are showcased to transform the way we solve national challenges.
ASTICON 2025 proudly unveiled four new cornerstone programs that define DOST-ASTI’s forward-thinking and integrated approach to national development:
🌐 ACCORD
Advancing Responsible AI for National Development
Focuses on ethical, inclusive, and practical AI development that addresses real-world problems and ensures technology serves everyone—not just a few.
📡 ASCENT
Empowering Autonomous Systems and Smart Environments
Delivers end-to-end solutions combining IoT, autonomous systems, and real-time analytics to improve efficiency, especially in user-centric designs and deployments.
🔗 CONNECT
Strengthening Digital Infrastructure for Emerging Technologies
Builds a secure, scalable digital backbone to power AI, blockchain, and cloud-based research and services—connecting data, systems, and people across the country.
🚀 THRIVE
Transforming Research into Real-World Impact
Ensures innovations don’t just stay in the lab. THRIVE accelerates the translation of research into products, services, and policies that deliver real value to Filipino communities.
Leaders Behind the Movement
Gracing this year’s event were esteemed leaders whose commitment to science, research, and commercialization have been instrumental in these groundbreaking initiatives:
-
Dr. Leah J. Buendia, Ph.D. – Undersecretary for Research and Development, DOST
-
Dr. Napoleon Juanillo Jr. – Assistant Secretary for Technology Transfer, Communications, and Commercialization, DOST
-
Dr. Franz A. De Leon, Ph.D. – Director, DOST-ASTI
Their presence reaffirms the government’s drive to ensure that science and technology are accessible, inclusive, and purpose-driven.
A Powerful Step Toward Cervical Cancer Elimination
One of the most inspiring highlights of ASTICON 2025 was the recognition of a powerful collaboration between DOST-ASTI and the End Cervical Cancer Philippines Organization Inc. (CERVIQ), led by Dr. Bogs Rivera.

Together, this partnership has laid the groundwork for building the first national cervical cancer image bank—a pioneering initiative that will contribute significantly to early detection, research, and AI-powered clinical support systems.

What sets this image bank apart is its deep Filipino context. Unlike datasets developed in remote countries with vastly different populations, environments, and disease patterns, this cervical image repository is being built by Filipinos, for Filipinos—capturing the nuances that global datasets often miss.

Each image will be professionally labeled using gold-standard references, including HPV-DNA testing and/or biopsy-confirmed cases, ensuring quality and reliability for future AI model training and clinical reference.

This is not just a technical achievement—it is a public health milestone. Creating a reliable, Filipino-specific cervical image bank is difficult and labor-intensive, but it holds the promise of life-saving, equitable innovation. It will serve as the backbone for future AI systems that assist healthcare workers in screening and managing cervical cancer, especially in low-resource settings.
In Conclusion
ASTICON 2025 is more than just a technology conference—it is a bold statement of what’s possible when we combine science, empathy, and purpose. With programs like ACCORD, ASCENT, CONNECT, and THRIVE, and with collaborations that prioritize Filipino lives and experiences, DOST-ASTI is not just creating solutions—it’s creating hope.
As the partnership with CERVIQ shows, when innovation is local, inclusive, and rooted in the community, it has the power to change lives.
Mabuhay ang agham at teknolohiya para sa bayan!
The author would like to extend heartfelt thanks—without particular order—to Ms. Ryne, Mr. Jeff, Ms. Rox, Ms. Van, Ms. Joanna, and the entire DOST–ASTI community for their invaluable support and encouragement.
