The Manila AI Futurist Campus Series Talks recently held its third health-focused session, spotlighting a transformative topic: “Revolutionizing Diagnostics: The Role of AI in Early Cervical Cancer Detection and Prevention.”
Hosted at the University of Perpetual Help – Data Molino Campus, the event drew several hundred nursing students from first to fourth year, eager to explore how emerging technologies can change the future of healthcare.

Understanding the Bigger Picture
The talk began by laying the foundation — explaining what cancer is, the specific challenges of cervical cancer, and how global elimination efforts compare to tackling other types of cancer. The discussion underscored a stark reality: while cervical cancer is highly preventable, it still claims thousands of lives each year in the Philippines due to low screening rates, gaps in vaccination coverage, and limited access to timely treatment.
Where AI Fits In
The session explored how artificial intelligence can address these challenges — from analyzing cervical images with greater accuracy, to streamlining patient triage, to integrating screening data for better health planning. AI’s potential to make diagnostics faster, more accurate, and more accessible is particularly promising for low-resource settings, where healthcare workers often face time and equipment constraints.
From Awareness to Action
Dr. Bogs Rivera, founder of the End Cervical Cancer Philippines Organization Inc. (CerviQ), shared his vision:
“The talks are very informative and engaging, but my desire is not just information — I want students to take action. We need to move from awareness to active participation, much like what the Cervical Cancer Action for Elimination is doing.”
Dr. Rivera emphasized the success of international collaborative models, such as the HPV Acceleration and Vaccination Program Cohort 2025, a joint initiative of the American Cancer Society and Cancer Research UK, where CerviQ proudly represents the Philippines as the only local participant.

Building the Next Generation of Health Leaders
For many of the attending nursing students, this was their first deep dive into how AI could be directly applied to their future clinical practice. The message was clear: technological innovation is not a replacement for human care, but a powerful tool to amplify the reach and effectiveness of healthcare professionals.
By equipping the next generation of nurses with both knowledge and inspiration, events like the AI Futurist Campus Series are planting seeds that could grow into nationwide change. The ultimate goal: a future where AI-powered early detection and prevention make cervical cancer a disease of the past in the Philippines.
