Marikina Strengthens Women’s Preventive Health Efforts Ahead of Lab for All Visit

City of Marikina

MARIKINA CITY – Even before the arrival of the national “Lab for All” caravan scheduled for March 17, the City Government of Marikina, through its City Health Office (CHO), has already begun mobilizing preventive health services for women.

As early as Sunday, local health teams together with partner organizations launched a pre-event medical mission at Fortune High School along Santan Street in Barangay Fortune, Marikina. The activity forms part of a three-day community health initiative designed to bring essential screening services closer to residents while reinforcing the city’s long-standing commitment to preventive care.

While many services were made available during the mission, one of the key highlights of the event was women’s health screening, focusing on breast and cervical cancer prevention.

Bringing Women’s Preventive Health Care Closer to the Community

Women who attended the medical mission were offered Clinical Breast Examinations (CBE) to help detect early signs of breast abnormalities. At the same time, cervical cancer screening services were made available using Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA)—a widely recommended screening method for detecting early cervical changes.

To further enhance the screening process, several stations utilized Speculoscope-Assisted VIA, a technology-enhanced approach that improves visualization of the cervix and allows for better documentation and evaluation of findings.

Out of the six screening tables prepared for the event, two stations were equipped with the speculoscope, allowing healthcare workers to perform magnified cervical visualization while conducting VIA.

This approach demonstrates how simple technological enhancements can strengthen community-based screening, making early detection more accessible and efficient even in outreach settings.

Enhancing VIA Through the Speculoscope

Traditional VIA relies on visual inspection after applying acetic acid to the cervix. While effective, the method can sometimes be limited by lighting, visualization, and documentation challenges.

The speculoscope-assisted VIA approach addresses these gaps by providing:

Magnified visualization of the cervix, allowing health workers to better identify suspicious lesions
Improved illumination, making cervical changes easier to detect
Digital image capture, which allows images to be stored or shared for further evaluation
Opportunities for remote consultation, enabling doctors to review findings even when not physically present

This innovation bridges the gap between basic screening and more advanced diagnostic evaluation, making it particularly useful for community outreach programs and resource-limited settings.

Strong Community Participation

Despite being a pre-event activity, the response from the community was encouraging. The screening teams were able to serve approximately 50 women during the mission, providing them with essential preventive services that may help detect health concerns early.

The event also highlighted the collaborative work of local health workers, volunteers, and partner organizations, demonstrating how community-driven healthcare initiatives can significantly expand access to life-saving screenings.

A City Moving Toward Preventive Health

Marikina has long been recognized for its proactive public health initiatives, and the early start of these screening activities reflects the city’s continued effort to prioritize preventive care—particularly for women’s health.

By integrating technologies such as speculoscope-assisted VIA into community screening programs, Marikina is helping demonstrate how innovative yet practical solutions can strengthen cervical cancer prevention efforts at the grassroots level.

With more activities expected as part of the upcoming Lab for All visit, the early medical mission already shows a clear message:

Preventive care does not start on the day of an event—it begins with communities that are committed to protecting the health of their people.

And in Marikina, that commitment is clearly visible in the growing efforts to ensure that every woman has access to early detection, timely care, and the opportunity to live a healthier life.
