Cervical Cancer Screening Philippines: From Smartphone to Speculoscope | CerviQ
Cervical cancer remains one of the most preventable yet life-threatening diseases affecting Filipino women today. Despite advances in global healthcare, thousands of women in the Philippines continue to be diagnosed each year—many at late stages where treatment becomes more difficult and costly.
At CerviQ – End Cervical Cancer Philippines Organization Inc., our mission has always been clear:
Make cervical cancer screening accessible, scalable, and effective for every Filipina.
But this mission did not begin with advanced devices or large-scale programs.
It started with a simple idea—and a smartphone.

🌱 [ Cervical Cancer Screening Philippines ] – The Early Days: When Innovation Meant Simplicity
Back in our early years, CerviQ introduced a bold and practical solution:
smartphone-based cervicography combined with Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA).

At a time when access to specialists and equipment was limited, we empowered:
- Midwives
- Nurses
- Frontline health workers
to perform screening and capture cervical images using mobile phones.
These images were then sent to physicians for remote evaluation—creating an early form of telemedicine for cervical cancer screening.
This approach allowed us to:
- Reach underserved and far-flung communities
- Provide faster access to expert evaluation
- Begin building a system for early detection
📄 This concept was first documented in our early work
⚠️ The Reality: Lessons From the Field
As we expanded into real communities, we quickly learned an important truth:
Access alone is not enough—quality and consistency matter just as much.
Using smartphones came with challenges:
- Inconsistent image quality
- Variability in visualization
- Difficulty in standardizing assessments

These were not failures—
👉 they were necessary lessons.
They showed us exactly what needed to be built next.
🔬 The Breakthrough: From Smartphone to Speculoscope
Today, CerviQ has evolved into a more advanced and structured system.
We now utilize a locally developed speculoscope —a portable cervical imaging device designed specifically for the Philippine setting.

This innovation enables:
- Clearer and more consistent visualization of the cervix
- Standardized image capture across different users and locations
- Improved accuracy in screening and interpretation
This marks a major shift:
👉 From makeshift innovation
👉 To purpose-built medical technology
🏥 Beyond the Device: A Complete Screening Ecosystem
CerviQ is no longer just about capturing images.
Today, we provide a complete cervical cancer screening ecosystem, including:
✅ Speculoscope-Assisted VIA
A more reliable and standardized screening method
✅ Digital Documentation
Secure storage and tracking of patient records
✅ Tele-Evaluation
Remote interpretation by medical experts
✅ Thermal Ablation Treatment and Referral Pathways
Ensuring patients are guided beyond screening
✅ Capacity Building
Training healthcare workers across communities
🤝 Scaling Impact Through Partnerships
From a single idea, CerviQ is now working alongside:
- Local Government Units (LGUs) such as Santo Tomas City, Cuenca, Batangas and Marikina City
- National partners like the Department of Science and Technology – Advanced Science and Technology Institute
- ParasaKanyaPH – an International Partners from the University of California San Diego
- Soon to be National Hopsital Partners – Dr. Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical City and the Cordillera Hospital of the Divine Grace in Benguet

Together, we are developing:
- The Philippine Cervical Image Bank
- Future AI-assisted screening technologies

🌍 Aligned With a Global Goal
The World Health Organization has set a global target to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem.

CerviQ contributes to this mission by integrating:
- Prevention (HPV vaccination awareness)
- Screening (early detection through VIA and imaging)
- Access to care (referral and treatment systems)
❤️ What This Journey Means
What started as a smartphone-based solution has now become a scalable, technology-driven screening system designed for real-world impact.
But more importantly—
It proves that meaningful innovation does not start with perfect tools.
It starts with a clear mission and the courage to begin.
🔔 Moving Forward
As we continue to expand, innovate, and collaborate, one thing remains unchanged:
Silip Cervix. Sagip Buhay.

Because every screened woman is a life potentially saved.
