What is E.P.I.C.?
E.P.I.C. stands for Education and Prevention to Impact Change. It is an awareness campaign that includes preventive screening. Its goal is to educate and screen women in the Philippines to reduce the number of cervical cancer cases. We work in partnership with different local government units, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to conduct our missions in your community.
Our E.P.I.C. Advantage
Our E.P.I.C. advantage is that our KNOWLEDGE comes from groups of international and local physicians and researchers. We use TECHNOLOGY that incorporates artificial intelligence to enhance medical decision-making. Our SOLUTION to reduce cervical cancer cases is heralded as a champion of change.
Burden of Disease
Globally, there are approximately 604,000 new cases and 342,000 deaths from cervical cancer. This makes it the second most prevalent cancer in women in less developed countries like the Philippines.
Cervical cancer is mainly caused by a virus called Human Papillomavirus (HPV). It can be effectively prevented by vaccination and screening. HPV likewise causes other types of cancer, including Penile, Anal, and Oral & Throat Cancer in men and Vaginal, Vulvar, Anal, and Oral & Throat Cancer in women.
A recent meta-analysis reported that almost one in three men worldwide are infected with at least one genital HPV type, and around one in five men are infected with one or more HR-HPV (high-risk HPV) types.
Champions of Change
To heighten awareness about the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection, cervical cancer, and other HPV-mediated diseases in the Philippines, the Rotary Club of South San Francisco, End Cervical Cancer PH (CerviQ), the Rotary Club of Manila, and the Rotary Club of Manila South have initiated a year-long demonstration project. They have partnered with different local government units and non-governmental organizations to promote community HPV and cervical cancer awareness. The project includes cervical screening and is dubbed as “Silip Cervix Sagip Buhay“.
Our Objectives:
- To educate and raise awareness in the community about HPV, Cervical Cancer, and other HPV-mediated diseases, thereby increasing HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening uptake.
- To promote capacity building by educating barangay health workers and health center allied professionals (midwives and nurses) to become presenter speakers in educating the community on HPV, Cervical Cancer, and HPV-mediated cancers.
- To train health professionals and selected barangay health workers to become champions of change and deliver cervical screening to the community using a VIA-based cervical screening approach called “Silip Cervix Sagip Buhay” that utilizes Artificial Intelligence and Colposcope.
- To train promising professionals to become patient navigators and orient them with the local service delivery referral pathway, making them future lead trainers of trainers.
End Cervical Cancer PH, the Rotary Clubs of South San Francisco, the Rotary Club of Manila, and the Rotary Club of Manila South all believe that Education and Prevention can Impact Change, where C.H.A.N.G.E. stands for Care, to Help, to Act, to Nurture, to Give, and to Empower, improving the lives of individuals and communities we touch.
“Silip Cervix Sagip Buhay” – A new approach to Cervical screening
The World Health Organization recommends three (3) approaches to cervical screening namely: (a.) Molecular, (b.) Cytology and (c.) VIsual Inspection, or VIA. Visual Inspection is an inexpensive screening approach that utilizes either our naked eye to visually assess the cervix, or the use of a magnification device called a colposcope/or camera.
Silip Cervix Sagip Buhay screening utilizes the VIA approach with the use of a colposcopic device and artificial intelligence called Cerviray AI.
Cerviray AI is a colposcope device that can detect precancerous (not yet cancer) lesions years ahead before it becomes cervical cancer, thus preventing progression to cancer, minimal local treatment and saving woman’s lives with 100% survival.
Cerviray AI has artificial intelligence that assist medical doctors assess cervical images, thus minimizing errors and avoiding misses.
Patient results can be obtained the same day and are sent to your email or any preferred social media platform.
