🔬What is Speculoscope-Assisted VIA??
This is an enhanced version of Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) where we use a special camera (speculoscope) to:
-
- Magnify and clearly visualize the cervix similar to a colposcope
- Capture images for documentation
- Allow expert review if needed
🧠 Why This Screening is Important?
Cervical cancer is:
-
- One of the most preventable cancers
- Detectable at an early stage
- Treatable if found early
In the Philippines, about 12 women die every day from this disease.
.
⚠️ Important: Preparation Before Your Appointment
To ensure accurate results:
-
- ❌ If you have had a total hysterectomy and your cervix was removed, you likely no longer need Pap smears.
- ❌ Avoid intercourse 24–48 hours before
- ❌ Avoid vaginal medications or douching
- ❌ Do NOT schedule during menstruation
.
⏱️ What to Expect During the Procedure
-
- Takes about 10–15 minutes
- A speculum will be gently inserted
- A mild acetic acid solution is applied
- Images of your cervix shall be taken and may be shown and explained to you.
.
⚠️ Possible Results
-
- ✔ Normal findings
- ⚠️ Suspicious changes (may need treatment or referral)
.
If Treatment is Needed…
If abnormalities are found:
-
- Some cases can be treated immediately (e.g., thermal ablation)
- Some cases may need cervical biopsy
- Others may be referred to partner hospitals
