WHY DO VISUAL INSPECTION WITH ACETIC ACID

World Heath Organization (WHO) Recommendation:

“Use a strategy of screen with VIA and treat, over a strategy of screen with cytology followed by colposcopy (with or without biopsy) and treat. The recommendation for VIA over cytology (Pap Smear & Liquid-Based) followed by colposcopy can be applied in countries that are currently considering either programme or countries that have both programmes are available.”

How to Perform VIA – Watch Video Below

Diagnostic accuracy of conventional cervical cytology (papanicolau smear), liquid-based cytology (LBC) and visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) in detecting premalignant and malignant lesions among Filipino Women in a tertiary hospital*

“The study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of conventional cytology, liquid-based cytology, and VIA to detect pre-malignant and malignant cervical lesions. 249 women participated in the study. Of these 6/249 (2.4%) turned out positive in pap smear, 7/249 (2.8%) turned out positive in liquid-based cytology while 23/249 (9.2%) turned out positive in VIA. Colposcopic guided cervical biopsy was done in all 249 patients to confirm the results.
Study Conclusion: Among the three screening tests, VIA appears to be the most accurate, followed by liquid-based cytology, as compared to conventional pap smear.”

Eastern Visayas host to 4th NICCA Localization Summit slated September 5 and 6.

A. Importance of the NICCA Localization Summit

The NICCA Localization Summit is a pivotal event aimed at advancing cancer care in the Philippines by ensuring that the provisions of NICCA are effectively implemented at the local level. It brings stakeholders together to align efforts in transforming cancer care, especially in diverse communities across the country.

B. Understanding NICCA

Enacted in 2019, NICCA addresses the need for a national response to cancer in the Philippines, focusing on reducing cancer incidence and mortality, improving quality of life for patients, and minimizing financial burdens. Its success depends on translating its provisions into actionable local policies and programs.

C. Why Localization is Critical

Addressing Regional Disparities: Localization helps address healthcare disparities by tailoring strategies to the unique needs of different regions and communities.
Engaging Local Stakeholders: It fosters collaboration among local government units, healthcare providers, and community leaders, increasing the chances of successful implementation.
Cultural Sensitivity: Localization integrates cultural sensitivities into cancer care, promoting greater community engagement.
Efficient Resource Allocation: It enables the effective and targeted allocation of resources where they are needed most.
D. Role of the Localization Summit

The summit is a working forum focused on developing actionable plans, including:

Mapping Local Needs and Resources: Identifying local cancer control needs, healthcare infrastructure, and gaps in care.
Showcasing Successful Models: Highlighting community-based, school-based, and workplace models for localizing NICCA.
Developing Local Action Agendas: Creating localized action agendas aligned with NICCA’s broader objectives.
The summit will also focus on building local capacity through training and partnerships, while establishing monitoring and evaluation frameworks to track progress and ensure accountability.

Conclusion

The NICCA Localization Summit is crucial for ensuring equitable cancer care across the Philippines. By uniting efforts and leveraging collective strengths, this summit will help create a cancer control strategy that is inclusive, responsive, and effective.
