TYPES OF
CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING
Pap Smear Cytology or Liquid-Based
A Pap test, aka conventional cytology, is a procedure where cells are collected from the surface of the cervix and vagina. The cells are viewed under a microscope to find out if they are abnormal. Liquid-based is a new method of collecting and viewing cells. Collected specimen is placed on a liquid-based medium instead of a glass slide
Visual Inspection With Acetic Acid
VIA involves inserting a vaginal speculum and swabbing the cervix with 3% to 5% acetic acid solution before doing a cervical inspection. The normal cervical lining is light pink to red in color. A cervical premalignant state (Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia – CIN) will turn the cervix into aceto-white for a few minutes after the application of acetic acid.
HPV – DNA Testing
The human papillomavirus (HPV) test detects the presence of the human papillomavirus, a virus that can lead to the development of genital warts, abnormal cervical cells or cervical cancer. Doctors can test for the HPV types that are most likely to cause cervical cancer by looking for pieces of their DNA in cervical cells. The test can be done at the same time as a Pap test.
WHY DO VISUAL INSPECTION WITH ACETIC ACID
World Heath Organization (WHO) Recommendation:
“Use a strategy of screen with VIA and treat, over a strategy of screen with cytology followed by colposcopy (with or without biopsy) and treat. The recommendation for VIA over cytology (Pap Smear & Liquid-Based) followed by colposcopy can be applied in countries that are currently considering either programme or countries that have both programmes are available.”

Diagnostic accuracy of conventional cervical cytology (papanicolau smear), liquid-based cytology (LBC) and visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) in detecting premalignant and malignant lesions among Filipino Women in a tertiary hospital*
“The study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of conventional cytology, liquid-based cytology, and VIA to detect pre-malignant and malignant cervical lesions. 249 women participated in the study. Of these 6/249 (2.4%) turned out positive in pap smear, 7/249 (2.8%) turned out positive in liquid-based cytology while 23/249 (9.2%) turned out positive in VIA. Colposcopic guided cervical biopsy was done in all 249 patients to confirm the results.
Study Conclusion: Among the three screening tests, VIA appears to be the most accurate, followed by liquid-based cytology, as compared to conventional pap smear.”
