What is CERVIQ?

CERVIQ is a mobile application or APP, that enables non-physician professionals (e.g. midwives, nurses), conduct cervical cancer screening using visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and Smartphone cervicography.
CERVICOGRAPHY is a diagnostic medical procedure in which a non-physician takes pictures of the cervix and submits them to a physician for interpretation via a digital medium. Images sent are then interpreted by a pool of specialized medical experts. Screening results, medical prescription if needed, or referrals for treatment/workup is sent back to the non-physician for printing, to be handed to the patient.

WHO CAN USE CERVIQ?

  • INDEPENDENT PRIVATE PRACTICING MIDWIFE living in the far-flung areas of the country can apply for cervical screening and CerviQ mobile app training to conduct cervical screening.
  • LABORATORY CLINICS. How many times have you gone into a nearby laboratory near you instead of getting a lab test in the hospital? The truth is convenience matters. With CerviQ, cervical cancer screening becomes available at any time of the day. You need not wait for your doctor as the images can be transferred to them directly for interpretation.
  • BARANGAY HEALTH CENTERS. Cervical Cancer Screening can be done at the barangay level. As long as you employ a trained midwife or nurse, you can get the screening done by trained barangay health workers (BHW) and relay images to doctors for interpretation, with real-time results.
  • LYING IN CLINICS and DOCTORS CLINIC. Patients need not wait for long hours for Medical Specialist to come. Trained nurses can conduct the screening, take a photo of the cervix and send it to the medical specialist who can be anywhere at any time of the day for interpretation.
  • DOCTORS. Obstetrics and Gynecologists can refer cases to more senior colleagues specializing either in the cervical pathologies (Fellow, Philippine Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology), cancer (Fellow, Society of Gynecologic Oncology of the Philippines), or Infectious diseases (Fellow, Philippine Infectious Diseases Society of OB and Gynecology).

Eastern Visayas host to 4th NICCA Localization Summit slated September 5 and 6.

A. Importance of the NICCA Localization Summit

The NICCA Localization Summit is a pivotal event aimed at advancing cancer care in the Philippines by ensuring that the provisions of NICCA are effectively implemented at the local level. It brings stakeholders together to align efforts in transforming cancer care, especially in diverse communities across the country.

B. Understanding NICCA

Enacted in 2019, NICCA addresses the need for a national response to cancer in the Philippines, focusing on reducing cancer incidence and mortality, improving quality of life for patients, and minimizing financial burdens. Its success depends on translating its provisions into actionable local policies and programs.

C. Why Localization is Critical

Addressing Regional Disparities: Localization helps address healthcare disparities by tailoring strategies to the unique needs of different regions and communities.
Engaging Local Stakeholders: It fosters collaboration among local government units, healthcare providers, and community leaders, increasing the chances of successful implementation.
Cultural Sensitivity: Localization integrates cultural sensitivities into cancer care, promoting greater community engagement.
Efficient Resource Allocation: It enables the effective and targeted allocation of resources where they are needed most.
D. Role of the Localization Summit

The summit is a working forum focused on developing actionable plans, including:

Mapping Local Needs and Resources: Identifying local cancer control needs, healthcare infrastructure, and gaps in care.
Showcasing Successful Models: Highlighting community-based, school-based, and workplace models for localizing NICCA.
Developing Local Action Agendas: Creating localized action agendas aligned with NICCA’s broader objectives.
The summit will also focus on building local capacity through training and partnerships, while establishing monitoring and evaluation frameworks to track progress and ensure accountability.

Conclusion

The NICCA Localization Summit is crucial for ensuring equitable cancer care across the Philippines. By uniting efforts and leveraging collective strengths, this summit will help create a cancer control strategy that is inclusive, responsive, and effective.
